Description

This single-lane bridge, built in 1851, carries a field track over the main Belfast to Dublin railway line just north of Station Road, Jonesborough, County Armagh. The bridge is of interest due to its design and distinctive parapet, and it has historical associations with Sir John Macneill and William Dargan, known as the "father" of Irish railways. It is similar in style to other rail-related bridges in the area, particularly that on the Barracraic Road to the south of Newry.

The bridge, constructed of coarsely dressed granodiorite blocks laid irregularly, features a single semi-elliptical span. Notable details include tooled edges to the abutments, rusticated voussoirs (projecting wedge-shaped stones), a finely dressed and chamfered stringcourse running through the arch at its base and just above its summit, and a similarly detailed parapet coping which is slightly advanced. The parapets rise in five steps from west to east, with the stringcourse below mirroring this stepped design. The parapets curve outwards at each end, terminating in pyramidal-capped piers. Shallow buttresses with tooled edges are positioned on either side of the arch.

The bridge was erected by the Dublin & Belfast Junction Railway Company based on designs by their chief engineer, Sir John Macneill, and built by William Dargan. Its completion helped to make the railway line between Belfast and Dublin fully operational, following the construction of the adjacent Craigmore Viaduct in 1852. The bridge is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
