Description

This bridge is of some architectural and historical interest due to its design and associations with Sir John Macneill and William Dargan, often considered the ‘father’ of Irish railways. Constructed around 1850, it is similar to other rail-related bridges in the area and contributes to a cohesive group of structures dating from that period.

The bridge is a single semi-elliptical arch carrying a one-and-a-half lane road over a double track of the Dublin-Belfast railway. It is built of irregularly laid squared granodiorite blocks, though the soffit blocks are regularly laid. The abutments are embellished with tooled edges, the voussoirs are rusticated, and there is a finely dressed and chamfered string course running through the arch at spring level and just above the crown, with a similarly detailed parapet coping. Shallow buttresses are present on the approach walls on either side, also with tooled edges. The north-west parapet curves outwards, and the carriageway is flat.

The bridge was erected by the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway Company, based on designs by its chief engineer, Sir John Macneill, and constructed by William Dargan. This section of the railway line, from Killeen to Dundalk, was opened in 1850. With the completion of the Craigmore Viaduct in 1852, the entire line between Dublin and Belfast became fully operational. While not specifically listed, the bridge is considered to have industrial archaeological interest.
