Description
This is a single-storey, two-bay vernacular house located on Edenappa Road, Jonesborough, Newry, County Armagh. While it has fallen into a state of disrepair, it is considered to have limited architectural or historic interest.
The house is aligned north-south, with the left gable facing the road. It has a pitched roof covered in artificial slate, featuring three red brick chimneys – one at each gable and one on the party wall between the bays. Half-round metal rainwater goods are present. The main west-facing elevation has a windbreak porch on the left side and a window to the right. The porch has a concrete flat roof and a tongue-and-groove sheeted entrance door; the cheeks are blank. The window is a 2/2 sliding sash with a granite cill. The right bay features a similar, slightly larger window. The left gable is adjoined by a lower outbuilding, the exposed section of which is blank. This outbuilding appears similar to the main house but has a natural slate roof and a door opening on its west face, with a blank left gable. The rear elevation has a window in the right bay and an opening to the outbuilding. The right gable is abutted by a lower and narrower outbuilding, now a ruinous and unremarkable structure.
The house sits on the south side of a lane off Edenappa Road, surrounded by several smaller, unremarkable outbuildings. A lime-washed wall with concrete coping and square-in-section gate piers (now supporting a modern metal gate) encloses the lane.
The house does not appear on the 1835 or 1861 Ordnance Survey maps, but it is documented in the 1864 Second Valuation (surveyed in 1862). Its rateable valuation remained consistent at 5 shillings. This evidence suggests a date of construction in the early 1860s, falling within the period of 1860-1879.
