Description

This is a two-storey public house located along a roadside in Jonesborough, County Armagh. The building dates from around 1800 to 1819 and was originally a house. It has been extensively refurbished and now includes modern additions to the rear and left gable, and retains no original features of particular interest.

The main façade, which faces southeast, is three openings wide and aligned northeast-southwest. It is topped by a pitched roof of natural slate, with three decorative bands – two of fishscale slates, and one of triangular slates. Three cement-rendered chimneys are present, one at each gable and another to the right of centre. An advanced eaves course supports half-round metal rainwater goods. The walls are finished with a wet-dashed stucco, with irregular quoins. Cills are painted granite. The ground floor features a 6/6 sliding sash window with horns at each end of the facade, and a central 3x1 fixed-pane window within a slightly enlarged original opening, with timber sheeted doors to its right. The first floor has three equally spaced 3/3 sliding sash windows, reduced in height. A hand-painted timber fascia board is positioned directly above the central openings. The left gable is abutted by a modern single-storey addition, which itself connects to a double-pile single-storey block, all detailed as residential. The exposed section of the left gable is blank. The rear elevation is almost entirely obscured by modern additions, with a single-storey block incorporating a basement on the left side. A single-storey, flat-roofed link block connects the main block to the rear pile of the addition on the left gable. The exposed rear elevation of the main block was not visible. The right gable contains a 2/2 sliding sash window without a cill. All other openings are modern. The new additions are considered of no special interest.

An Ordnance Survey map from 1835 depicts a building likely to be the same as the current structure. It was described in the First Valuation book as a two-storey house measuring 37 feet by 20 feet by 13 feet 6 inches. An early survey slide from April 1991 showed the ground floor windows as 6/6 sliding sashes and those to the first floor as 1/1 sashes, all with horns. The original walls were lime-rendered and whitewashed. A small outbuilding with a gable facing the road, a pitched corrugated metal roof, and detailed as a house, was located to the left of the main building. The building’s design is considered vernacular.
