Description

This is an attractive vernacular house with associated outbuildings, reflecting the local tradition of extending buildings both upwards and longitudinally. The house, likely built between 1860 and 1879, is aligned north-south on a bend along Molly Road, in the townland of Foughill Otra, near Jonesborough, Newry.

The building consists of two bays. The left bay is single-storey, and the right bay is two-storey. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with tiled verges and a chimney at each gable end. The chimney on the right gable is constructed of red brick, while the chimney on the left gable is rendered. There are no rainwater goods. The principal elevation faces west and is constructed of lime-rendered rubble stone. The left bay features a window opening, now boarded over, with a granite cill. The right bay has a windbreak porch to the left end and a window to each floor on its right side. The porch has a natural slate monopitched roof and a tongue-and-groove entrance door; the sides of the porch are blank. The left gable of the left bay is adjoined by a lower, single-storey lean-to outbuilding with a corrugated metal roof and a tongue-and-groove sheeted door on its west face. The rear elevation is cement-rendered, with a single metal-frame window to the first floor of the left bay. The right gable is abutted by a single-storey outbuilding, mirroring the house's detailing with a pitched corrugated metal roof and a tongue-and-groove door on its west face. A smaller outbuilding, similarly detailed but with a natural slate roof, abuts the right gable of this second outbuilding.

Although a building is depicted at this location on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map, its ground plan does not match the present configuration. The Valuation Revision book of 1875 references a “new house” at this location. The house is enclosed at the road by a lime-rendered rubble wall with stone copings and modern square-in-section gate piers supporting a pair of wrought-iron loop-headed gates. A small garden with a further outbuilding (of no particular interest) sits to the front of the property.
