Description

This is a single-storey, two-bay vernacular dwelling, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839. It occupies a sheltered site on the west side of Mountain Road, Killevy, near Newry, County Armagh. The house retains much of its original character and features.

The building is aligned roughly east-west and is accompanied by a one-and-a-half-storey outbuilding attached to the left gable. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with two brick chimneys – one on the right gable of the house and one on the right gable of the outbuilding. There are no rainwater goods. The walls are constructed of whitewashed random rubble. The south-facing principal elevation features a windbreak porch to the left of the right bay, and two windows with exposed box sliding sash windows (with horns) and concrete cills. The porch has a monopitched natural slate roof with a t&g sheeted door on its south face, with blank cheeks on either side. The left bay also has a window matching the style of those in the right bay. The outbuilding has a central door on each floor, both constructed with t&g sheeting.

The left gable of the outbuilding abuts two adjacent rubble stone outbuildings: an animal house to the left and a shed to the right. These outbuildings are single-storey and located at a lower level than the main house due to the sloping ground. The shed on the right is taller and projects beyond the main house's south elevation. Both outbuildings have monopitched roofs - the animal house's roof is corrugated metal, while the shed’s is natural slate. The rear elevation of the main house has a fixed-pane window with a stone cill. The outbuilding features a loading door at its upper level, accessible by eight granite steps. The right gable of the main house and the exposed right gable of the outbuilding are blank.

Another outbuilding, mirroring the style of the main house, stands opposite the dwelling to the southeast. It has a pair of t&g sheeted doors to the right on its north elevation, with blank elevations on the others. This outbuilding is abutted to the right by a pair of successively lower lean-to sheds with monopitched corrugated metal roofs, both featuring a door opening to the north.

The house is accessed via a steeply sloping lane, and a building is marked on the Ordnance Survey 6” map of 1835, and subsequent editions, confirming its presence at this location in the 19th century.
