Description
This is a granite milepost located east of Jonesborough Village Road, near Newry, County Armagh. It was moved from its original position on the main Newry-Dundalk road around 1995 and is now embedded in a granite rubble stone wall. The milepost is approximately 145cm high, 50cm wide, and 35cm deep, though the lower section has a much coarser finish, suggesting it was originally only 85cm above the ground. The front face is finely dressed and has a pointed head, while the rear is roughly cut. A cast-iron plaque is affixed to the front, bearing black raised lettering indicating distances to Dundalk (8 miles) and Newry (5 miles). It likely dates from the early 1800s, coinciding with a Post Office survey and improvement of main post roads.
