Description

The former Osborne Hotel, located on Dock Street in Warrenpoint, Newry, County Down, was constructed between 1860 and 1879. It was demolished and replaced in the early 1990s by an amusement/activity centre.

The building that existed on the site in 1834 was superseded in 1863, with the structure described as "all unfinished except shop" at that time. A coal yard was originally located behind the building. The late 19th-century building was of three storeys. The ground floor featured a rendered and channelled finish, while the first and second floors were constructed of red and blue brickwork with yellow brick dressings. A central arched vehicle entrance was present, featuring channelled voussoirs and a faceted key block. A modern entrance door now occupies the location. Consoles supported a cornice at first-floor level, and the eaves cornice was square and built in brick. All windows were double-hung with single vertical glazing bars; the first-floor windows were semicircular-headed, and the second-floor windows were segmental-headed. A modern window has been inserted into a ground-floor opening with a square moulded architrave. Yellow brick quoins define the extremities of the building. The façade was five windows wide.

The ground and first floors were symmetrical, each five openings wide, with the ground floor band rusticated and the first floor displaying exposed brickwork. A segmental-headed coachway was centrally placed, with a keystone marking the top of the arch. Flanking the coachway were doorways with transom lights; the left doorway had a moulded architrave. Large shop windows were located on either side of the doorways, the left one also featuring an architrave. Eight corbels supported the overhanging cornice of the shop fronts—two at each end and one on either side of each doorway. The five equally spaced first-floor windows were semicircular-headed two-over-two sliding sashes with deep cills.
