Description

House south-east of 15 Ballyblaugh Road, Aughintober, Newry, County Down

A substantial vernacular house of late 19th-century date with an evolved plan form. Although a building is recorded at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, the present dwelling dates from the 1860s–1879 period and is described in the 1879 Valuation revision book as a "new house - slated", with its valuation increasing from £4 10s 0d to £6 10s 0d at that time.

The house is a two-storey, three-bay structure built on the south side of Ballyblaugh Road, with walls of lime-rendered coursed rubble stone. It has a pitched natural slate roof with a cement-rendered chimney on the south-east gable. The right bay roof is aligned at right angles and continues to the rear as a return, eliminating the need for a gable at the opposite end, with a second chimney positioned at the centre of the return ridge. An advanced masonry eaves course supports half-round metal rainwater goods.

The principal elevation faces north-east. Window openings are irregularly placed throughout. All contain 2/2 exposed box sliding sash windows with granite cills, diminishing in height from ground to first floor. The left bay has a ground-floor window and a first-floor window set to the left. The central bay is narrower and contains a four-panelled door with bolection mouldings, over which sits a narrow margin-paned transom, with a first-floor window set to the left. The right bay is gabled and flush with the façade, containing a ground-floor window and a narrower first-floor window. The left gable is cement-rendered with a ground-floor window set to the right.

The rear elevation shows alterations. The right bay has an opening at ground floor converted to a doorway. The central bay features a tongue-and-groove sheeted and bead-moulded door with a mouth-organ transom over, and a first-floor window to the left. The left bay advances as a rear return, detailed similarly to the main house, with a ground-floor and first-floor window on its south-east cheek. The return's south-west gable has a corrugated metal door inserted into a former ground-floor window opening, with a small 1/1 sash window at first floor. The north-west face of the return is completely abutted by a rubble stone lean-to.

The lean-to has a mono-pitched artificial slate roof reaching the eaves level of the main house. Its rear (south-west) elevation has a doorway. Its front (north-east) gable contains a metal-framed 2x3 window. Its side (north-west) elevation has a 2/2 sash window positioned right of centre.

To the rear stands a rubble stone outbuilding with a pitched natural slate roof. Its right elevation is abutted at centre by a curved rubble stone wall enclosing a natural well.
