Description
Fatima is a detached dwelling house, one of a pair, built around 1954 on Dublin Road, Newry. The building was constructed for directors of ‘Quinn’s at the Milestone’, a local chain of shops.
The house is built of rusticated red brick with soldier course heads above the window and door openings, and concrete cills to the windows. It has a hipped red-tile roof, with a gabled rear return, and overhanging eaves with boxed details. Two rusticated brick chimneys are visible, one on the front, and one on the right-hand elevation. Metal rainwater goods are fitted, with rectangular, decorated hoppers at the eaves and at first floor level, where they accommodate soil pipes from the wash hand basins. All the windows are margin-paned casements, each with a top-hung margin-paned transom.
The main facade has three openings on the ground floor: a three-panelled window to the left, French windows with sidelights in the centre, and a single casement window to the right. The first floor mirrors this arrangement, with a pair of casements in the centre. The left elevation features the main entrance, recessed within a shallow projecting brick porch. The timber door is panelled, with glazed panels at the top centre, and has bronze door furniture. The porch canopy has fluted edges and extends as drip mouldings above top-hung casements on either side. The rear elevation has two-storey returns to the left and right. A half-landing window with coloured glass margins can be found on the rear of the main block, alongside a single casement window and a small glass brick window insert near ground level. The left return, which adjoins a garage at ground floor level, has a set of casement windows in the gable at first floor. The right return features a gabled bargeboard and a quarter-glazed gable roundel, with a single casement window to the ground floor and two casements to the first floor. A brick garage, with a shed extension and a reinforced concrete roof, is situated to the left, with a margin-paned window at the rear and sliding garage doors. The vehicular and pedestrian gate piers are brick, and the wrought metal pedestrian gate incorporates the name "Fatima".
