Description
This is a detached house built around 1954, one of a pair constructed alongside 8 Loretto Park (HB16/29/022). The house is built of rusticated red brick with soldier course heads to window and door openings, and concrete cills to windows. It has a hipped red-tile roof, gabled on one rear return, with boxed, overhanging eaves. Two rusticated brick chimneys are present, one on the front pitch of the façade and the other on the front pitch of the right elevation. Metal rainwater goods are fitted, featuring rectangular decorated hoppers at eaves level and at the first-floor level, accommodating soil pipes from the wash hand basins in the bedrooms.
The main façade has three openings. On the ground floor, from left to right, there is a three-panelled window, French windows with sidelights, and a single casement window. The first floor mirrors this arrangement, with a pair of central casements. The left elevation features the main entrance, recessed within a shallow projecting brick porch. The door is timber, three-panelled, with three leaded stained glass windows above a transom, and has bronze door furniture. The porch canopy has fluted edges and continues as drip mouldings above top-hung casements on either side of the porch. Above are three individual casement windows. The rear elevation exhibits a two-storey return on both the left and right sides. A first-floor casement window is present on the main rear block, to the right of which is a tall half-landing window with coloured glass margins. On the ground floor is a single casement window, and a glass brick window has been inserted into the wall near ground level. The left return, abuting a garage at ground floor level, features a set of casement windows in the gable at first floor. To the right of the kitchen door is a single casement. The right return is gabled with a plain bargeboard and a quarter-glazed gable roundel; it contains a single casement window to the ground floor and two casements to the first floor. A brick garage and a chimneyed shed with a reinforced concrete roof abut the left return. A one-storey flat-roof brick kitchen extension has been added to the side of the left return, partly obscuring the rear wall of the main block.
The houses were built around 1954 for directors of ‘Quinn’s at the Milestone,’ a chain of shops located in Newry.
