Description

A pair of vernacular houses, likely built between 1800 and 1819, are situated on a sloping hillside off Sandys Brae, aligned northeast-southwest. Number 8 is on the left, and Number 10 on the right. Both houses have been substantially altered, with few original features remaining.

The houses are constructed of lime-rendered and whitewashed random granite rubble, with significant areas of modern concrete blockwork around doors and windows. The roofs are pitched and clad in corrugated iron. All windows have modern concrete sills. Number 8 has a concrete block chimney between the first and second bays from the left. It has no rainwater goods. The main entrance to Number 8 is in the middle bay and features a modern glazed and panelled, stained timber door. All original window openings have been enlarged, and the bays now contain modern painted timber casement windows. The left gable is rendered and blank, while the rear elevation is rendered and painted with no openings. The right gable abuts Number 10.

Number 10 steps down from Number 8 and is stepped between the middle and right bays. The roof has two modern cement-rendered chimneys—one between the left and middle bays, and another on the right gable. The right gable has a concrete verge. The main entrance is located in the middle bay, with a porch formed by a projecting roofline above the door, supported by rendered cheeks, and featuring a modern glazed, stained timber door. Each bay has a painted timber top-hung window; the one in the middle bay is positioned to the left of the door. The left gable abuts Number 8, and the right gable is blank. A single painted top-hung window is present on the rear left bay.

These buildings appear on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. They were valued below £5 in the 1838 valuation and were described as one storey in the 1861 valuation. An early Historic Monuments and Buildings Board survey card describes them as "a small terrace of single-storey whitened dwellings." The buildings are located in the townland of Ballymageogh.
