Bridge, School Road, Claragh, near Clough, Downpatrick, County Down

This is a good example of a rubble-built, single-span hump-backed bridge, likely constructed before 1834. The bridge carries School Road over the Moneycarragh River, approximately 2.5 miles west of the village of Clough in County Down. It crosses the river at a right angle. The structure is built from rubble fieldstone and features a pronounced hump and a roughly elliptical arch. The parapets are topped with concrete copings.

The simple design, particularly the hump-backed form and right-angle river crossing, suggests construction likely before 1830 and may correspond to the Ordnance Survey map of 1834. Supporting map evidence is found in PRONI OS/6/3/36/1 (c.1834), OS/6/3/36/2 (c.1858), and OS/6/3/36/3 (c.1901). The bridge’s construction date is estimated to be between 1820 and 1839. It holds industrial archaeological interest and demonstrates local historical significance.
