Description

This is one of a pair of three-storey, two-bay houses located on the south side of Sandy’s Street in Newry. Dating from 1860 to 1879, it is one of several mid-Victorian houses of a similar style along the street. The building has a skew plan form, with its gable not perpendicular to the facade, and is topped by a pitched roof covered in artificial slate. A rendered chimney is visible on the right gable. The facade features half-round metal gutters with a downpipe on the right-hand side. The walls are painted, lined and rendered, with a raised eaves course. The main entrance is at the left, accessed by a single granite step from the street. To the right of the entrance is a single-storey canted bay with a plain cornice around a parapeted flat roof, and a downpipe on the left. This cornice continues as a two-step platband between the ground and first floors. The canted bay has sliding sash windows on each face. The ground floor openings are currently sheeted with plywood. First and second floor windows, aligned with each other, are offset to the right of the ground floor openings and are now infilled. The top floor windows are shorter in height, and all cills are made of painted granite. A rendered and chamfered plinth is surmounted by a rendered brick wall, which returns on either side of the entrance steps, separating the house from the footpath. The right gable abuts a lower building, with a section of rendered wall visible. The left gable forms a shared party wall with the adjacent house. The building first appears in the Valuation Revision Book of 1879, owned by John Nesbitt, who built a number of houses in the area. This house is located within the Carneyhough townland and is situated within a conservation area.
