Description
14 Trevor Hill, Newry
A three-storey building on the east side of Trevor Hill, comprising two separate properties. Dating from the early 19th century, it originally would have been a significant structure, though few original features now remain. The building is shown on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map and appears to have retained its overall plan form to the present day. It is recorded in the 1863 valuation as three and one-third storeys high, suggesting no alterations to its elevations have occurred since that time.
The building presents an unusual plan, with three bays to the front elevation and five bays to the rear. Property 1, at the left, is one bay wide at front and two bays wide at rear. Property 2, to the right, has two bays to both elevations.
The front wall is constructed of squared and coursed granite rubble with a raised eaves course. The natural slate roof has its left gable turned 30 degrees towards the facade, creating a valley to the front pitch, with a cement skew to the left gable. A cast iron skylight sits in the front pitch. Cement rendered chimneys are positioned at the left and at the ridge between the first and second bay. Semicircular metal rainwater goods run along the facade with a downpipe to the right.
Lower buildings abut both the left and right gables; the exposed wall sections above these are cement rendered.
Property 1 now operates as a shop with a modern frontage set within a semi-elliptical headed opening. Above are single top-hung windows to each floor, both with granite cills, the second-floor window diminished in height. The rear elevation is entirely cement rendered, with its right bay abutted by a two-storey return. This return features two modern 1/1 top-hung casement windows to both first and second floors, all with granite cills and the top windows diminished in height. The return has a flat roof and blank cement render walls to the back gable and left cheek.
Property 2 has its main entrance at the left, comprising a modern plastic door with similar sidelights and radial fanlight, all set within a semi-elliptical headed opening trimmed with ashlar granite. To its right is a plastic 2x2 top-hung window in a cement rendered opening. Two 1/1 top-hung plastic windows appear to each upper floor, all with granite cills aligned with ground-floor openings, those at the top diminished in height. The rear elevation is cement rendered. The right bay is abutted by a two-storey flat-roofed extension. At the left on the ground floor is a 1/1 plastic window, with identical windows directly above on each floor, all with granite cills and the top window diminished in height. A door leads from the half landing between the first and second floors onto the roof of the return, with a metal escape ladder fixed from here to the rear return wall. The return is cement rendered with a modern door and three windows to the ground floor, and four similar windows over.
The building is located within a conservation area. It does not merit special protection.
