Description

The Corry Memorial is an ashlar granite obelisk erected in 1839 to commemorate Trevor Corry, a prominent magistrate and public figure in Newry. The monument is situated in a small park at the junction of Sandys Street and Downshire Road, forming an elegant and prominent landmark at the northern entry to the town.

The memorial takes the form of a tapered, strap-pointed obelisk rising from a square base. The base features raised corner piers supporting a projecting roll-moulded chamfered coping. Above this sits a pediment on each of the four faces, each pediment bearing antefixae at the corners and inscribed with the name "Corry" in raised capitals.

The north and south panels of the base are coffered and inset with weathered carved sandstone panels, each displaying a coat of arms surrounded by a laurel wreath. The west and east panels are similarly coffered and inset with slate slabs bearing lengthy inscriptions. The west face records that the monument was erected in honour of Trevor Corry Esq., who served as magistrate for the town of Newry and the counties of Down and Armagh for 35 years "with integrity ability and zeal". The inscription notes the monument was funded by voluntary subscription of the inhabitants of Newry and the nobility and gentry of the neighbourhood. The east face carries a longer eulogy describing Corry's personal qualities—his grace, elegance, courageous spirit, cultivation through the study of polite literature, and his virtues as magistrate, subject, adviser, philanthropist and friend. It records his death on 22 July 1838 in his 58th year.

The base of the obelisk rests on a square plinth formed by six plain granite steps on each side. The park enclosure to the north comprises the gable and rear garden wall of an adjacent house. To the street frontage, modern plain steel railings on a low chamfered granite plinth define the boundary; these railings retain markings indicating the position of original wrought-iron railings. Matching double gates access the park from Sandys Street near the junction with the main road, with a plain flat metal semicircular arch above reading "Corry Park". A smaller single gate is located at the rear right of the park.

Trevor Corry was the second son of Isaac Corry of Abbey Yard, Newry. Beyond his role as magistrate, he held several public appointments: Trustee of St. Mary's Church Newry, trustee of Newry Turnpike, Newry Bank, Agent for the Ross Estate at Rostrevor, and Deputy Lieutenant of County Down. The small park surrounding the monument was purchased by public subscription and opened to the public in 1877.
