Description
This is a terrace of nine Edwardian houses, dating from around 1902, located just outside the municipal boundary of Newry, a location likely chosen to benefit from lower rates. The terrace presents a considerable visual impact. The buildings are two and a half storeys high and include front gardens. They feature pitched, slated roofs with terracotta ridges and dormer gables to the front façade. The chimneys are of cement render with overhanging string courses and copings, with a raised stack to the left of the façade. Cast iron rainwater pipes with a cyma recta moulding, embossed with floral motifs, are fixed to bracketed rendered eaves. The facades are of cement-rendered brickwork, lined to resemble ashlar. All window and door openings have chamfered reveals and segmentally headed surrounds, except for the dormers. The doors are typically four-panelled with a transom light above. All windows are 1/1 sliding sash windows. A two-storey canted window bay is situated to the left of the front door, with a continuous cill course at the first floor level and a parapeted flat roof. There is a first-floor window directly above the door. A gabled dormer above the bay window incorporates a pair of semicircular headed windows with a fretted timber bargeboard above. Alterations, including replacement windows and doors, have been made to the facades of all but two of the buildings, numbers 29 and 33.
A terrace of six houses is recorded in the 1902 Valuation Book, each valued at £17.10s.0d, with two initially vacant. Numbers 29 and 31 first appear in the valuation records in 1910, suggesting they were added later, although there are no visible joins or architectural differences.
