Description
Dromore Lodge was a house built between 1780 and 1799, situated at the junction of Upper Dromore Road and Bridal Loanan, near Warrenpoint, Newry, County Down. The building has been demolished, and new houses now occupy its site.
Depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, it was described in the 1861 Valuation Book as measuring 22 yards by 6.5 yards, with two storeys and various returns. In 1869, a gate lodge was constructed. The property was occupied by Hugh Campbell under lease from the Hall Estate. A 1846 travelogue characterised the area as attractive, featuring villas and gentlemen’s seats, notably Dromore Lodge, the residence of James Robinson, Esq., J.P. The 1901-02 Ordnance Survey map explicitly identifies the building as Dromore Lodge.
The original survey card described the house as an 18th-century building of two storeys, originally presenting a five-window facade to the road. Walls were roughcast, with a wide, bracketed slate roof overhang extending below bargeboards. Double-hung windows featured glazing bars, and granite cills. The entrance door incorporated a semi-circular fanlight (with glazing bars), recessed within a coved elliptical arched opening. An inner door was set within another elliptical arched opening featuring a "spider's web" fanlight and sidelights. The interior was noted for its good detailing.
