Telephone Kiosk Tirkane Post Office, Slaghtneill Road, Maghera, BT46 5NJ

This is a red ‘K6’ type telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, dating from between 1936 and 1953. Fewer than 184 such kiosks reportedly remain in Northern Ireland, with very few still functioning as telephone boxes. The kiosk has a cast-iron body with a timber door, complete with leather hinges and its original opening mechanism, and a blank rear, all painted red. Original glass remains, although largely broken as of November 2018, with replacement perspex glazing present. Each elevation displays the symbolic ‘Tudor Crown’ motif, with three ‘TELEPHONE’ signs, one of which is missing. The kiosk is situated at Tirkane Post Office, along Slaghtneill Road, approximately three miles northwest of Maghera, immediately adjacent and north of number 4 Slaghtneill Road, within a small cluster of rural buildings including two houses, the post office, and a collection of agricultural sheds, all close to the roadside. Modern equipment is housed inside, and the kiosk was not working at the time of the November 2018 survey. The kiosk is likely a pre-1953 model, retaining the Tudor Crown design.
