Description
The house, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839, is a one and a half storey, three bay, direct entry dwelling located about two miles northwest of the village of Swatragh in the townland of Grillagh, near Maghera. It faces northeast and retains remains of thatch under a corrugated iron roof. The building is approached by a short lane leading northwest from Grillagh Road, situated about half a mile from the Maghera/Swatragh Road.
The external walls are constructed of stone, with a harled finish above a non-projecting black base. The roofline terminates in concrete parapets, and three corbelled red brick chimneystacks are present – one over each gable and the third serving the kitchen hearth. Modern plastic rainwater goods are fitted. The front elevation features a fully glazed entrance door flanked by metal-framed windows with opening lights. To the right (northwest) are a pair of 6/6 vertically sliding timber windows with exposed frames and curved sash stops, one of which is missing. Traditional depth sills are present.
At the rear, a pair of 1/1 timber windows are located on the northwest corner, with the right-hand unit opening. Adjacent is the kitchen, which has a lean-to corrugated iron roof and plastic rainwater goods, along with a three-light metal-framed window. A timber-framed conservatory with a corrugated iron roof and metal rainwater goods is also present, incorporating a two-panel glazed door. The rear elevation concludes with a top-hung metal-framed window with a traditional sill. A brick-built WC has been added against the southwest gable, with whitened walls and a corrugated iron roof. A ledged, braced and timber sheeted door provides access, and a top-hung metal-framed window with three horizontal panes is set into the gable.
The house and associated outbuildings are depicted on Ordnance Survey maps dated 1831 and 1853. These maps are primary source references. The house represents a vernacular style and is noted for its proportions, structural system, and the survival of its interior features. It has local historical interest.
