Description
The house, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839, is situated about two miles north of Maghera, a short distance from the road connecting Maghera and Swatragh. It is a single-storey, three-bay dwelling with a direct entry. The original layout remains untouched. The roof structure over the kitchen and bedroom is of significant interest. The southwest two bays are covered with thatch beneath corrugated iron. Parapet copings are made of concrete. A corbelled red brick chimneystack rises above the southwest gable, while the opposite gable features a chimney lacking corbelling, with remnants of a similar feature serving the kitchen hearth. Light metal rainwater goods are in place, with the gutter supported on drive-in hooks. The wall structure consists of exposed or harled rubble stone. A lean-to porch, now roofless and without a door, protects the entrance. Unglazed openings are present on the front and southwest side; the front opening retains a metal frame. To the left of the porch is an unglazed timber framed window, and to the right, a top-hung 3/3 unglazed metal-framed window is followed by a plain vertically-sliding window, from which the outer sash is missing and the inner sash is unglazed. Sash stops are curved. The window opening on the left of the porch lacks a sill, while the one to the right retains a deep stone sill, and the final opening has a narrow stone sill. Attached to the northeast gable is a concrete block structure, now without a door and featuring an unglazed window aperture. On the opposite gable is a stone structure with a collapsed cast iron roof. The house is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1831-32, accompanied by a small outbuilding to the northeast, and a larger outbuilding situated closer to the house in 1853. These outbuildings are no longer present. The corrugated iron roof covering was added between the late 1940s and the early 1950s. The property was formerly a thatched house.
