Description
5-7 High Street, Moneymore is a three-storey, two-bay mid-terrace house with shopfront, constructed between 1820 and 1839 as part of a formal, symmetrical neo-classical composition in late Georgian style. The building is faced with dressed ashlar stonework and forms part of a significant architectural scheme that screens the market yard from the High Street.
The ground floor contains a modern shopfront with two single fanlighted entrance doors on either side and two large-pane display windows between them, each with four smaller panes above, subdivided by narrow pilasters and mullions. One fanlight retains original marginal glazing; the other is subdivided vertically into three sections. A plastic name fascia spans the shopfront. Below the display windows is a mock plaster panel lined to resemble crazy paving, incorporating two large metal ventilation grills serving the basement. Three steps ascend to the shop floor. Both doors provide access to the shop.
At first-floor level are two double-hung sliding sash windows with 12 panes, with two 6-pane square-proportioned sash windows above at second-floor level. The wall above the shopfront is faced with ashlar sandstone, fitted with a half-round gutter and natural slate roof. Stone-faced chimney stacks are present. A door in the adjacent lateral passage of the breakfront centrepiece provides access to stairs serving the first and second floors.
The rear of the building is partially obscured by a single-storey back return containing a collection of stores with flat and lean-to roofs. The upper floors contain a 12-pane double-hung sash window at first-floor level and a 6-pane sash window directly above at second-floor level. An oculus and a semi-circular headed 16-pane double-hung sash window lighting the original staircase are also present at first-floor level. The walls at upper levels are faced with coursed white limestone, with half-round guttering and natural slate roof.
The building was designed by William John Booth, the Draper's Company's architect, as part of the Company's second market project in Moneymore. Contemporary documents describe the scheme as ambitious and note that the Company was constructing a handsome grain store and market house at an estimated cost of £5,000 to £6,000. Formal plans for the complex, which occupies the area bounded by High Street to the west and Market Street to the north, were prepared in 1835 following a proposal by Bridger identifying the need for such facilities. The project was completed in 1839. Upon completion, contemporary accounts praised "the whole pile of buildings" as "extremely well executed" with "a most striking and ornamental appearance" and aptly suited to its intended purposes. The building was listed in 1975. At that time it was occupied by the Manager of Moneymore Co-op Agricultural & Fruit Growers Society. In 1976, M Barrett undertook repairs to the windows. In 1979, butcher Thomas Campbell carried out alterations under the direction of architects Rooney & McConville, with grant assistance obtained from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. The building received a Historic Buildings Grant in 1984. The present owner occupied the building from 1990 onwards and erected the current name fascia.
The building's shopfront and internal arrangement have been compromised by poorly considered modern interventions but can be redeemed through appropriate restoration. The building is situated within a conservation area.
