Description
This is a charming vernacular cottage, likely dating from the early 19th century, specifically between 1820 and 1839. It is situated in the Ballindrum townland, at 70 Springhill Road, Moneymore. The cottage appears as a small, six-bay, one-and-a-half-story building with gabled ends.
The front elevation features a shallow, projecting porch with a lean-to roof set beneath the main eaves. The porch has a four-panelled, moulded door, with timber fascia and a half-round gutter and downpipe. The porch walls are harled and painted white, with a black plinth. To the left of the porch are two widely spaced, 12-pane double-hung sliding sash windows, while three similar, but unequally spaced, windows are to the right. The walls are harled and whitewashed, with a black painted plinth and timber fascia featuring a half-round gutter and a single downpipe. The roof is now covered with brown interlocking concrete tiles, a replacement for an earlier thatched roof installed before 1970. The cottage's gables are windowless, finished with timber bargeboards, and each has a brick chimney, one positioned on the ridge and the other several metres from the other gable.
The rear wall presents a central four-panelled door, with a single 12-pane double-hung sliding sash window to the left and two windows to the right, one a two-light, 9-pane double-hung sliding sash, and the other a 12-pane double-hung sliding sash. All walls have the same finish as the front. The cottage is positioned at a right angle to Springhill Road, with its gable close to the roadside. A gravelled forecourt is present, and at the rear are stone-built outbuildings with red brick trim around the openings. These outbuildings have modern timber roofs and are sheeted with corrugated iron. Stone gate piers with conical tops mark the entrance. The cottage was indicated on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832.
