Description

A single storey vernacular dwelling with four bays and a lobby entry, located on elevated ground at the end of a long laneway near Crossmaglen. The building dates from approximately 1850 and was extended southwards by an additional bay sometime between 1907 and 1956.

The cottage does not appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1835, though buildings occupied nearby sites with different footprints. It is first recorded on the second edition map of 1862 as part of a cluster of buildings, and remains the only survivor of this settlement group. The original dwelling measured approximately 32 feet in length, corresponding to the two northernmost bays. It appears in Griffith's Valuation of 1864 as the residence of Patrick McGeeney, valued at £1 and leased from landlord Peter Murphy. The 1901 and 1911 censuses record James McGeeney, a labourer, in residence with his wife and two daughters. At both census dates the dwelling was recorded as thatched. By the First General Revaluation in 1933, the building dimensions were recorded as 32 feet by 14 feet by 9 feet in height, containing two rooms, a kitchen and a bedroom. At that time the bedroom roof was slated while the kitchen was roofed in corrugated metal. The extension to the south was added between 1907 and 1956, most likely after 1933.

The front elevation faces east with a projecting entrance porch featuring a split timber sheeted composite door flanked by projecting dressed stone piers and topped with a curved fascia board to a flat roof, complete with a vision panel and metal hinge brackets. The square-headed window openings contain replacement two over two painted timber sliding sash windows with concrete sills. The roof is finished in natural slate with two centrally positioned chimneys on the ridge and raised concrete verges either side. Rainwater goods are modern uPVC throughout. The rubble-stone wall is painted.

The rear elevation has a single square-headed window opening with two over two painted timber sliding sash windows and concrete sill to the left, and a split half-glazed painted door to the right. Three modern rooflights are equally positioned on the roof. The south gable has a single square-headed window opening with centrally positioned two over two painted timber sliding sash windows and concrete sill. The west gable is blank.

The building is surrounded by a modern low dry-stone boundary wall punctuated with circular piers and modern painted metal gates at points of pedestrian access.

Extensive modernisation undertaken after 2015 has removed or obscured most of the original fabric. The roof was recorded as corrugated metal at the time of survey in 2015 but has since been renovated in natural slate.
