Description
This is an early 19th-century, rustic bridge spanning the Ballymully River within an undulating agricultural landscape. The bridge and the nearby townland of Moneyhaw derive their names from the historic Crosspatrick well, formerly a site for religious "Stations" dedicated to St Patrick, where a cross was reputedly located. The well was infilled with rubble by a local farmer and is no longer visible, although it is shown on Ordnance Survey maps.
The bridge is a narrow, humpback arch stone structure with a single, semi-circular arch of 7-metre span, built from black random rubble stonework with thin, long, random voussoirs. The underside of the arch is daubed with mortar. The bridge is 4.5 metres wide between the parapet walls and 17 metres long overall. One parapet wall splayed to the west. The parapet is approximately 1 metre high, featuring a cement hogsback coping with no overhang.
Although the semi-circular arch form suggests a possible late 18th-century construction, it is generally considered to have been built in the early 19th century, likely under the Grand Jury system. It was initially documented as a footwalk on an 1832 Ordnance Survey map, and later as a bridge on an 1856 Ordnance Survey map. The structure exhibits notable characteristics of industrial archaeological interest.
