Description

Cairnalbana Presbyterian Church is a relatively large, plain single-storey gabled Presbyterian church built in 1866, much extended and altered in 1989 and 2000, and now largely modern in appearance. The building sits on the east side of Carnalbanagh Road just south of the intersection with Glenview Road, approximately 6 miles south-west of Glenarm.

The west (gabled) elevation features a large gabled porch added in 1989. The north face of the porch has a recessed front glazed door and screen with a small gable feature above. The west face has two evenly spaced semicircular-headed windows. High on the gable is a small plaque (repositioned) inscribed "Cairnalbana Church Built A.D. 1866", with the name "Cairnalbana Presbyterian Church" in black plastic letters below it. The south face of the porch has three evenly spaced semicircular-headed windows.

The north elevation displays three large semicircular-headed windows lighting the church proper on the right side. To the left is a small square-headed door opening. The far left contains the two-storey extension added in 1989. A recessed door opening is positioned to the right side, with three unevenly spaced small semicircular-headed windows to the left. The first floor has two widely spaced semicircular-headed windows. The east elevation is symmetrical with two paired semicircular-headed windows flanking the ground and first floors. The south elevation has three semicircular-headed windows on the left side. To the right is the modern two-storey extension, with a small hipped-roof porch to its left. A steel fire escape stair leads from a plain first-floor door, with two small semicircular-headed windows to its right. Below is one small plain window. All façades are finished in roughcast with a gabled roof in artificial slate and PVC rainwater goods. A two-storey former manse stands to the south side of the church.

The church was constructed in 1866 when the Presbyterian congregation of Glenarm was divided following the 1859 Revival, which had been particularly fervent in the Carnalbanagh area. Two acres were acquired from Lord Antrim for the church and manse, and a formerly interdenominational prayer house was converted to a schoolhouse. The church was extended in 1989 with a large two-storey hall added to the rear and a larger porch to the front, and was extensively refurbished in 2000.
