Description
The graveyard is situated on a slight slope to the east of Munie Road, approximately one and a half miles southwest of Glenarm. It is roughly square in plan and enclosed by a badly dilapidated rubble wall. Within the enclosure are various headstones dating from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, with the earliest visible dating to 1748. Narrow, limestone chip-covered paths wind between the graves, and interspersed among them are the remains of rubble walls. Some of these walls appear to be from the small church, which is believed to have stood at the northeast corner of the enclosure. Evidence suggests stone has been removed from, and reassembled throughout, the graveyard to create smaller enclosures. The graveyard was marked on Ordnance Survey maps of 1832 as a "Burial ground" and in a revised map of 1858 as "Church in ruins." According to local legend, the church, originally called the church of ‘Gluaire’, was founded by St Patrick and placed in the charge of a man named MacLaisre. Historical records suggest the church may have been associated with the name ‘MacCrevin’, later developing into ‘Tickmacrevan’ or ‘House of MacCrevin’. The church was abandoned by at least 1622, as noted in the Ulster Visitation book for that year. The graveyard's construction date is estimated to be between 1820 and 1839. It is a scheduled monument and, while not listed, retains historical and notable characteristics.
