Description

This is an iron foot bridge, likely dating from around 1870. Originally situated approximately two miles north of its current position, it was relocated to its present site around 1991 and slightly lengthened to accommodate the topography of the new location. The bridge is of segmental iron construction with a timber walkway. It now spans a section of the Glenarm River approximately 1.5 miles south of its original location, and sits west of ‘Lord Antrim’s cottage’.

An earlier ‘rustic bridge’ is indicated on an Ordnance Survey map from 1857, suggesting a structure of stone or timber; however, the existing iron bridge appears to have been in place by 1872 according to photographic evidence. Historic maps, estate papers and watercolour paintings held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland support its landscape context and evolution.
