Milepost, Munie Road, Munie south, Glenarm, Ballymena, Co Antrim

This is a cast iron triangular milepost, likely dating from the 1830s. It stands on the north side of Munie Road, approximately 3¼ miles southwest of Glenarm. The milepost’s faces are painted with black lettering on a white background. The western face reads ‘Glenarm 2½ [Irish] miles’, while the eastern face reads ‘Ballymena 14’. The top face has been broken off.

The milepost’s style is similar to those erected along the nearby Antrim Coast Road, some of which still survive. While the Coast Road was constructed between 1832 and 1842, the road where this milepost stands is older, and similar examples are found elsewhere in the county. The typeface used suggests a date around the 1830s. The milepost possesses rarity value and of industrial archaeological interest, alongside local historical interest.
