Description
The remains of a single girder span railway bridge stand over the Ulster Canal at Cloncorick, Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh. Constructed between 1860 and 1879 as part of the Clones & Cavan Extension Railway, the line opened in 1862 and later became part of the Great Northern Railway network before closing in 1960. Only the two skewed abutments of the bridge are now visible. They are built of randomly laid, rock-faced limestone blocks, with the north-east ends of both abutments slightly advanced. Margined quoins and moulded sandstone copings decorate the ends of the abutments. Concrete bearing blocks, which would have supported the metal girders, remain at the north abutment. At the north-east end of the south abutment, remnants of a parapet survive, and the abutment continues as a random rubble embankment retaining wall to the south-west. The bridge's ends are now in poor condition. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and is currently recorded as derelict.
