Description
This is a well-executed bridge associated with the Ulster Canal. Constructed between 1820 and 1839, it is a significant example of 19th-century canal infrastructure. The bridge carries a one-and-a-half lane hump-backed road over the canal, which remains watered on both sides. The bridge’s structure consists of a single semicircular arch approximately 6.12 metres (20 feet 1 inch) in span, of which the canal itself occupies 4.09 metres (13 feet 5 inches). The abutments are built from regularly-laid dressed limestone blocks, while the spandrels are of roughly-dressed random limestone rubble. Finely dressed voussoirs and a detailed string course run over the arch crown, adding to the bridge’s aesthetic quality. The parapets have been recently rebuilt using random rubble. The west side features square, out-projecting piers, and original dressed coping blocks have been reused in both parapet walls. The towpath runs through the arch on the south side and is edged with large dressed stones. Masonry facing extends along the canal bank for a short distance on either side of the bridge.
The Ulster Canal was built between 1825 and 1842, with William Cubitt serving as the consulting engineer and William Dargan as the principal contractor. This particular bridge was not shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, indicating a construction date later in the 1830s. The canal closed in 1931. The bridge, along with the stone towpaths, is what’s included in the listing. It has notable industrial archaeological interest and is valued for its style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, structural system, and authorship; however, recent alterations detract somewhat from its original appearance. The bridge's setting contributes to its group value and local historical significance.
