Description
Ballyhoe Bridge, likely constructed between 1780 and 1799, carries a two-lane road over the River Finn and is a significant feature of the local landscape. The bridge consists of three semicircular arches, with the central span slightly wider and of similar height to the flanking arches. A small flood arch is present on the right bank. The bridge is built of random rubble limestone, and incorporates angled cutwaters rising to just below parapet level on both faces. Later repairs are indicated by the use of dressed stone in the voussoirs of the arch closest to the right bank (northeast) and in the adjoining downstream cutwater. The upstream (southeast) parapet coping is of dressed blocks with rusticated faces, while the downstream coping consists of split rubble laid on end. The carriageway deck is slightly humped and includes a footpath on each side. A dressed stone buttress supports the downstream approach wall. A pipe traverses the upstream face of the bridge. Some sections of the upstream and downstream approach walls have been rebuilt using shuttered concrete and concrete blockwork respectively. The abutments, piers, and soffits have been treated with gunite.
Ballyhoe Bridge appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 onwards and was once a key route between Belturbet and Clones. Its simple design suggests a late 18th or early 19th century origin. The bridge exhibits architectural interest due to its style, proportions, and setting. It also holds local historical significance and is considered an example of industrial archaeology. The bridge is owned by central government and sits within the townlands of Cloncallick and Renogher Glebe.
