Description
This is a pleasant, nicely proportioned house, likely built between 1840 and 1859. It is situated on the north side of Cavan Road in the townland of Derrybrack, Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh.
The house is a symmetrical, one-and-a-half storey, three-bay construction, oriented northeast-southwest. It has a pitched roof covered with natural slate tiles and two polychrome brick chimneys, one positioned between each bay. A timber eaves board supports half-round metal rainwater goods. The exterior walls are wet-dashed and feature painted stepped stucco quoins and a base course. The windows are 1/1 sliding sash windows with horns, painted reveals, and stone sills. The principal elevation faces southeast and features recessed semi-circular arched openings with blind tympanums above each window and door. A four-panelled timber door with bolection moulding, sidelights, and a plain rectangular transom sits centrally. Windows are located in the bays to either side. The left and right gables each incorporate a timber top-hung casement window set into the apex.
The rear elevation is partially obscured by a two-storey return to the left of centre and a boiler house (of no particular interest) attached to the ground floor of the right bay. The exposed section of the rear elevation displays a window on each floor, centered within the wall; the ground floor window is a 2/2 sliding sash, while the upper floor window is a smaller 1/1 sash. The return section resembles a house, featuring a slightly monopitched leaded roof and a timber eaves board. An advanced, harled chimney sits on the left side of the rear face, to the right of which are two metal-framed top-hung casements on each floor. A timber door is located on the left cheek, while the right cheek is blank.
The house is well-screened from the road by a maturely planted garden. Behind the house is a large yard enclosed by three low outbuildings constructed with white-washed rubble stone walls, pitched corrugated metal roofs, and t+g sheeted openings.
Although an earlier, smaller structure existed on this site, as indicated on an 1835 Ordnance Survey map, it was not valued. The present house likely corresponds to the one depicted on the 1857 Ordnance Survey map. Records from the 1860 Valuation Office books describe it as a house measuring 40 feet 6 inches by 18 feet, with a single storey and attic, and an attached building measuring 15 feet by 7 feet 6 inches, then occupied by James Renwick.
