Description
This bridge, constructed between 1860 and 1879, carries a field accommodation track over the former Clones and Cavan railway line, located approximately 6.5 kilometers east of Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh. The bridge features a single semi-elliptical arch built of roughly squared limestone blocks. It has shallow buttresses with tooled quoin margins, and the voussoirs are rock faced, with a tooled inner margin. A finely-dressed sandstone string course runs around each quoin at arch spring level, but does not extend through the arch. The parapets are coped with large, rock-faced limestone blocks that project slightly beyond the bridge's outer faces, terminating in out-projecting piers.
Originally built to carry a country road over the single-track railway line between Clones and Cavan, the bridge's construction likely occurred during the 1860-61 period when much of the line's construction work took place. It was probably designed by John Stokes, the resident engineer for the Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway, possibly in collaboration with James Barton, the part-time engineer-in-chief. The railway line was opened in April 1862 and subsequently merged into the Irish North-western Railway in 1876, before being subsumed into the Great Northern Railway in 1876. The line ceased operation in 1960. While exhibiting industrial archaeological interest, the bridge does not possess sufficient architectural or historic character to warrant listing.
