Description
This is an attractive late 19th-century rural schoolhouse with many original features remaining. It is located on a lane to the south of Clonmaulin Townland, Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh. The building is a single-storey, single-bay L-shaped structure aligned east to west. It has a pitched roof covered with natural slate, with a red brick chimney featuring concrete coping on the left gable. The eaves overhang, displaying exposed rafter tails, and half-round metal rainwater goods are present. The walls are wet-dashed over coursed rubble stone, with dressed stone quoins visible. The windows are the remains of 6/6 sliding sash windows with tooled stone cills. The principal elevation of the schoolhouse faces south. A large, full-height entrance porch, acting as a main block, abuts the left side, with the ridge of its roof extending from the front pitch of the main block. The south gable has a window that is currently boarded over, above which is a stone tablet reading ‘Clonmaulin / National School / 1890’. The right side of the porch features a timber-sheeted door, while the left side is blank. To the right of the porch, on the main block, are two windows. The left gable is blank. The rear elevation has a window on the right and a timber-sheeted door on the left. The right gable features a large window opening with a stone lintel and brick dressing set at a high level to the centre, above which is a roundel infilled with perforated metal sheeting. A ruinous outbuilding of rubble stone construction, now roofless with invisible openings, stands to the rear. A datestone indicates construction between 1880 and 1899. The building was identified as Clonmaulin School on an Ordnance Survey map from 1907.
