Description

This is a well-executed canal bridge associated with the Ulster Canal, constructed between 1825 and 1842. The bridge, located south of the Clones-Cavan road in the townland of Clonfad, Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh, originally carried a one-and-a-half lane road over the canal. It features a single semicircular arch constructed from irregularly-laid and roughly dressed limestone blocks, with finely dressed voussoirs. A detailed string course runs over the arch crown, and projecting parapet copings add to the design. The parapets terminate in square, projecting piers and extend as random rubble approach walls. The towpath runs through the arch on the south side, its edge marked with large dressed stones. The canal bank is faced with masonry for a short distance on either side of the bridge. The arch span is 6.12 meters (20 feet 1 inch), with a canal width of 4.09 meters (13 feet 5 inches).

At the north end, the original approach road turned at a right angle and gently descended to meet the main road some distance to the east. This approach has been cut through by the present road, which now bypasses the bridge, exposing the underside of the arch. The original humped-back road has been removed. The line of the canal is visible to the east and infilled to the west.

The Ulster Canal was engineered by William Cubitt and constructed by William Dargan, known principally for his railway work. This bridge is not depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, indicating a later construction date within the 1830s. The canal ceased operation in 1931. The bridge exhibits industrial archaeological interest due to its association with the canal's construction and the involvement of prominent engineers.
