Description
A pair of vernacular cottages were built around 1879, situated to the south of Carra Old Bridge. They are positioned on a prominent, exposed site overlooking the River Finn. The cottages are aligned north-east to south-west and each is one-and-a-half storeys high, with two bays. They have pitched roofs covered in natural slate, which are now in poor repair, and two chimneys, one on the party wall between the dwellings. A cast-iron skylight is present on the rear pitch of the southern cottage. The eaves are boxed with timber soffits and plain bargeboards, and there are half-round metal rainwater goods. The walls are lime-washed and lime-rendered over a rubble stone core. The windows are largely the remains of 1/1 sliding sash windows, without horns, and have stone cills. The principal elevations face north-east. Each cottage features a windbreak porch to the end bay, with a ridge rising to eaves level, and a timber-sheeted door. The cheeks of the porches are blank. Single windows are present in both bays of each dwelling, although those on the right-hand cottage are boarded over. Apex windows are found in both left and right gable ends. The rear elevation contains a 2/2 fixed-pane window to the left bay of the left cottage and the right bay of the right cottage. The cottages likely served as farm labourers' houses, belonging to First Thompson of Carra House. An Ordnance Survey map from 1857 indicates a building on the site, and the Valuation Revision book from 1879 assigns each cottage a valuation of £1.10s.0d.
