Description
The bridge at Clonfad carries the Clones to Cavan road over the Finn River. Likely dating from between 1820 and 1839, it is shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834, and subsequently in 1857 and 1907. The bridge consists of two small segmental arches. The north-eastern half lies within County Monaghan. It is constructed of squared limestone rubble for the abutments, pier, and angled cutwaters (rising to arch spring level on both sides). The spandrels are of random rubble, and the voussoirs are of more finely dressed stone, featuring elongated keystones. The parapets have coping blocks with rusticated faces. The inner surfaces of the south-western arch have been reinforced with a concrete skin. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
