Description
This is a small, neat lodge or caretaker’s house, likely built between 1860 and 1879, probably contemporary with Sampson’s Tower. Constructed of handmade red brick in Flemish bond, the lodge is a one-and-a-half storey rectangular cottage situated within Farlow Wood, a short distance from Sampson’s Tower on the Farlow Road side. Measuring approximately 7 metres by 4½ metres externally, it sits within its own defined front garden, although access from Farlow Road is not clearly marked, with a path indicated on Ordnance Survey maps. The south front features a central doorway flanked by windows, and smaller windows are positioned high in each gable. Window and door surrounds are broad sandstone, and deeply chamfered ashlar sandstone marks the quoins. Originally possessing good materials and detailing in a Neo-Georgian style, the building is now in a state of considerable disrepair. It may have served as the residence of a caretaker for Sampson’s Tower. The lodge’s former use was as gates, screens, or a lodge. It is currently used as a house, and remains in private ownership.
