Gate Lodge, Radisson Roe Park Hotel, Ballykelly Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 9LB

This is a late Georgian gate lodge, constructed circa 1826 during improvements made to Roe Park by Sir Francis McNaghten. The lodge is located at the entrance to the Radisson Roe Park Hotel, on the Ballykelly Road near Limavady. It sits at the beginning of a long, winding avenue leading to the hotel and is adjacent to the Ballykelly Road.

The building is a single storey structure with a basement, built of ashlar sandstone above entrance level and on three elevations, including the canted gable facing Ballykelly Road. The lower walls and the entire rear wall are of random rubble schist. The roof is pitched with hips faceted over the canted bay, and it has a large overhang covered in dark asbestos slates. A single chimney with two pots is centrally positioned on the roof. The lodge is three bays long, with the entrance door located on the side of the canted bay. The building is currently devoid of ornamentation and with boarded-up windows and door. The gutters are ogee in black, with one downpipe.

The grounds around the lodge are overgrown and slope downwards to the rear, accommodating the basement which has a single access door. Historic sources include the Ordnance Survey Map of 1831 for County Londonderry, the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, Lewis’s Topographical Dictionary, and publications by Girvan, Bence-Jones, and Mullin.
