War Memorial, Catherine Street, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 9DB

The war memorial stands in Limavady, Co Londonderry, and was constructed between 1920 and 1939. Originally located on Catherine Street, it was moved to its current position in the late 1970s following the demolition of the earlier War Memorial Building in 1974.

The memorial is of polished granite, consisting of four stepped plinths surmounted by an undecorated Celtic cross. The bottom plinth is approximately 440mm high and unadorned. The second plinth, 1.5 metres high, features a garland wreath picked out in gold paint on its north-facing elevation. The west elevation lists the names of those who fell during 1939-45, while the east elevation displays names of those killed in 1914-18. A third plinth of 200mm height bears the inscription ‘We will remember them’, and the top plinth, 400mm high, reads ‘The fallen of Limavady District; 1914-18, 1939-45’.

The memorial is set within a courtyard paved with pink brick, on the site of the former War Memorial Building. A flagpole is situated to the northwest. The courtyard is enclosed on two sides by a low rendered wall and railings. The memorial’s current setting and the surrounding court are considered to detract from the entrance to Limavady, and in 1974, Girvan suggested that a new building of similar proportions might be a preferable solution.
