War Memorial Building, 4 Roemill Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 9DF

This was a two-storey, nine-bay Georgian house, likely constructed between 1720 and 1739, with a reputed date of 1735. It stood at the top of the entrance road into Limavady from the Roe Bridge, deliberately closing the view. The building was demolished and replaced by a war memorial courtyard (reference HB02/12/035).

The house had lined, rendered walls and a slated roof. The facade was five windows wide in the centre and terminated at either end with two-window segmental bay projections. All windows were double-hung with full astragal glazing bars. The entrance was accessed by a flight of steps leading to a panelled door recessed within a square moulded architrave. This architrave was flanked by unfluted Doric columns with two tiers of architrave blocks supporting a moulded elliptical pediment. The interior underwent alterations, and extensions were added.

Originally the residence of the Boyle family, the house was purchased in 1921 through public subscription to serve as a war memorial. In 1974, the building was destroyed by explosion and subsequently demolished. The Ordnance Survey map of 1895 referred to it as ‘Bridge Hill’. A projecting bay on the north-west side was added between Ordnance Survey maps of 1830 and 1848.
