Description
38 Catherine Street is a late Victorian terraced house in the Georgian style, built in the early 20th century (approximately 1900–1919). It forms part of a symmetrical pair with its neighbouring number 36, and together they provide an important architectural stepping stone on Catherine Street, descending in height to the lower houses further along the terrace. The building remains well preserved externally and contributes significantly to the architectural character of the street.
The house is a three-storey, two-bay brick structure facing north-west onto Catherine Street. It has a natural slate roof with a Velux-type rooflight and a rendered chimney on the south-west gable. The upper two floors feature twelve-pane sliding sash windows with painted stone cills. A string course formed by the first-floor cill extends across both paired buildings. The entrance door, positioned at the north-east end of the facade, has a glazed upper portion and is set within a simple rendered rectangular surround with a plain segmental fanlight above. The single ground-floor window contains a pair of sashes.
Historically, a building was recorded on this site on the 1830 town map, but the Griffiths Valuation of 1858 indicates it was of considerably lower value (£4.00) than the present structure, suggesting the current house does not date from that period. The 1907 Ordnance Survey map is the first to show buildings consistent with those now existing, displaying symmetrical returns about the central junction. The earliest surviving deeds for the houses date from 1899, though this does not necessarily confirm the date of construction, as deeds for the entire terrace were drawn up contemporaneously. Michael Keen French, founding partner of Mark Keen French and Ingram Solicitors (which remains on Catherine Street), owned the row of houses from number 38 to 44.
The building functioned as a private residence until the 1980s, when it was purchased from Michael McGinnis by a dental practice. It underwent renovation in 1984. A rear extension was added in 1989, constructed by builder Raymond Colhoun, extending the full depth of the site.
The building is now in commercial use as a health centre (dental surgery).
