Description
This is a well-maintained row of three, two-storey terraced houses built around the turn of the 20th century. They are located on the south side of Main Street in Limavady, near the southwest end, and complement the rising streetscape. The houses are flanked by lower, two-storey rendered buildings and a taller, three-storey Georgian terrace.
The terrace is constructed of brick with slate roofs, featuring a single roof light and brick chimneys on each house. Each house has a front entrance door on the northeast side, above which is a rectangular fanlight window. Two two-pane sash windows face southwest, with two matching windows positioned directly above them. A decorative band of blue brick runs along the ground floor, between the window and fanlight heads, and a similar band is positioned between the first-floor windows. Each opening is accentuated with a blue brick keystone. A continuous decorated brick cornice supports the ogee gutter at eaves level.
To the rear of each building is a small return with a lean-to slate roof. All rear sashes are divided into four panes. The return to number 11 has been rendered and slightly enlarged, aligning with the rear of a wider Georgian house next door.
Historical maps indicate a previous row of thatched houses on this site. An 1848 Ordnance Survey map notes that the rear yard was held "in common" with houses on Linenhall Street. The terrace was built by the grandfather of the current owner of number 11. Remarkably, the ownership of all three houses has remained within the same family. A photograph depicting the original thatched houses, dating before 1904, can be found in “Limavady and the Roe Valley” by Rev. TH Mullin.
