Description
This is a well-maintained row of three terraced houses, dating from the early 20th century (1900-1919), and forming a neat addition to Main Street, Limavady. The terrace is located on the south side of Main Street, near the southwest end, and is situated between lower two-story rendered buildings and a taller, three-story Georgian terrace.
The houses are constructed of brick with slate roofs, each featuring a roof light and brick chimneys. Each house has a front door on the northeast side, surmounted by a rectangular fanlight window. Two two-pane sash windows face southwest, with matching windows positioned directly above. A decorative band of blue brick runs horizontally above the ground-floor windows and fanlights, and a similar band is positioned between the first-floor windows. Each window opening is accentuated with a blue brick keystone. A continuous decorated brick cornice supports an ogee gutter at eaves level.
The rear of each building features a small return with a lean-to slate roof. All rear windows are sash windows with four panes. The return to number 11 has been rendered and slightly enlarged, aligning with the rear wall of the adjacent, much wider Georgian house.
Historical records, including an 1830 Ordnance Survey map, indicate a previous row of thatched houses on this site. An 1848 Ordnance Survey map notes that the rear yard was held in “common” with houses on Linenhall Street. The terrace was built by the grandfather of the current owner, and ownership remains within the same family. A photograph of the earlier thatched houses from before 1904 can be found in “Limavady and the Roe Valley” by Rev T H Mullan.
