Description
An imposing pre-1830 terraced building in Limavady that forms two adjoining houses within a prominent group of four properties facing northwest onto Catherine Street. Though its facades have preserved some historical detail, the building's principal significance lies in its group context and contribution to the street's architectural dignity.
The structure is three storeys tall, five bays wide, rendered and decorated as a traditional terraced building. A natural slate roof is topped with large brick chimneys at each end of the ridge, and a smaller chimney positioned off centre. The central bay—itself slightly offset—features a wider spacing of windows to the northeast than to the southwest.
The central windows on the upper two floors are set within an aedicule surround. The top floor window has a segmental pediment with keystone and flanking Doric pilasters, with two modillions beneath the cill. The first floor window beneath carries a triangular pediment with fifteen panes. Other second floor windows feature moulded architraves and double keystones with cills supported by small modillions. The remaining first floor windows have moulded architraves and double keystones but no modillions. Applied plaster quoins frame the sides of the facade.
A plain entablature divides the ground floor from the first, breaking forward over the southwest entrance door. Thin pilasters flank the windows and doors, appearing to support the entablature. The ground floor contains two substantially wide windows (approximately 2.5 metres) that bear no relationship to the fenestration above, creating an unusual effect for such a classically decorated building. Double panelled doors feature a cobweb fanlight in PVC that intrudes into the entablature zone, further departing from classical conventions.
The rear elevation is painted and rendered with several blocked windows. The remaining windows are PVC casements arranged in an irregular pattern. A steel fire escape descends from the second floor, and a flat-roofed concrete brick extension extends into the courtyard. The stable block formerly present to the rear has been demolished.
The building appears on the 1831 Ordnance Survey map as two separate buildings, each with stables. By the Griffiths Valuation of 1858, number 32 was occupied by Mary Allen and number 30 by Reverend Nathan McCausland Brown, with Frederick McCausland as landlord. On 16 September 1918, number 32 opened as the Ulster Bank while number 30 housed the bank's Pro Manager. The bank purchased the premises in 1920, at which point the facades were likely combined and embellished. By the 1970s the ground floor had undergone renovation without regard to the rest of the building, and the two properties were converted into a single functioning bank. A 1995 renovation by Smith and McMurty architects reinstated the classical detail to the ground floor.
