28 Catherine Street, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 7BB

This is a three-story, two-bay house built around 1828. It is located in Catherine Street, Limavady, and is part of a group of four former Georgian-style houses facing northwest onto the street. Its architectural and townscape significance is enhanced by its association with three other listed buildings; demolition would severely impact the street’s character.

The house is rendered and painted, and stands as an end-of-terrace property. The ground floor features a shop front window extending across the full width, divided by stained mullions approximately every 600mm. Above, a double-pane sash window has painted stone sills and a simple plaster architrave. The roof is covered in natural slate, with modern PVC rainwater goods. Large chimneys are present at each end of the ridge; the southwest chimney is brick, while the northeast chimney is rendered and retains only three of its original six pots. A date plaque reading ‘1828’ is fixed high up on the northeast gable, with a painted sign advertising a funeral directors below. A small lean-to extension projects from the rear, with casement windows. The side wall of the yard has been removed for car access, and a flat-roofed shed constructed in concrete brick now occupies the site of the former coach house.

The 1831 Ordnance Survey Map shows the building alongside its four neighbours. In 1858, the property was used as a Police Barracks, leased from Mr Frederick McCausland, although by 1907 this use had moved to number 46 Catherine Street. The building has been in use as a funeral parlour for at least twenty years and is currently occupied as an office.
