Description

36 Catherine Street, Limavady, is a late Victorian terraced house built in the Georgian style, constructed between 1900 and 1919. It forms one half of a symmetrical pair with number 38, positioned to provide an appropriate architectural step down from the larger early Victorian buildings adjoining them to the smaller two-storey terrace beyond. The building remains well preserved externally and contributes significantly to the architectural quality of Catherine Street.

The house is three storeys and two bays, constructed in brick and facing north-west onto Catherine Street. It has a natural slate roof with a velux-type rooflight and shares a rendered chimney with the taller number 34 to the north-east. The upper two floors have twelve-pane sliding sash windows with painted stone cills. The cill to the first floor extends across both paired buildings as a string course. The entrance door, positioned at the south-west end of the façade, features a plain segmental fanlight above and a simple rendered rectangular surround. The upper portion of the door is glazed, and traces of a bell pull remain painted over on the south-west side. The single ground floor window contains a pair of sashes.

The rear elevation is rendered and painted, with a mansard roof in natural slate fitted with velux roof lights. Twelve-pane sash windows on the first floor are protected by bars. A sand cement rendered two-storey return with a mono pitch roof projects from the main building. A flat-roofed modern extension fills additional space to one side, with barred modern windows. At the back of the site stands a renovated coach house with a large opening to the courtyard spanning its full façade.

A building stood on this site as shown on the 1831 town map. However, the Griffith Valuation of 1858 indicates that the present house did not then exist, as a structure valued at only £4.00 occupied the site—considerably less than the smaller two-storey houses to the south-west, which were valued at £6.00. The present building first appears on the 1907 Ordnance Survey. Its deeds date from 1899, when it was owned by Michael Keen French, founding partner of Mark King French and Ingram solicitors (still located on Catherine Street). French owned much of the terrace at that time, from number 38 to at least number 44, and had deeds drawn up for the row.

The building functioned as a private house until 1986. It was renovated in the early 1980s by its occupant, Gerry Loughery, who converted the stable block to accommodate his architectural practice before relocating it to 16 Main Street. Since 1986, the solicitors have owned the building, and plans have been approved for a two to three-storey rear extension, with architect Dickson McDonald.
