Description
Rascahan Cottage is a charming house dating from around 1820 to 1839, with alterations made around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It sits on a generous site surrounded by mature trees, taking advantage of the site's natural slopes with a lower ground floor overlooking an enclosed yard.
The house is a three-story smooth rendered building painted a pale pink. It features a projecting wing on one side with a sweeping roofline over a projecting porch, and a dipping roofline over two small rooms on the opposite side. The main part of the house, containing the staircase, is a single room deep and three bays long, with a bay window on its northeast gable. Distinctive features include hood mouldings over square window and door openings, wavy roof barge details terminating in whorls, and half-round gutters to the eaves. Bold plaster quoins, picked out in white, accentuate the corners against the pale pink render creating a simple, well-modelled exterior. The roofs are covered in Welsh slate with red clay ridge tiles, and chimneys have tall red clay pots, which may not be original. Large-pane Victorian sash windows are present throughout. The house displays a general Edwardian character.
The entrance avenue sweeps around the front, descending to the lower ground floor yard, and leads to a sunken garden that would have offered a delightful view. The green lawns, gravel forecourt, changes in level, and mature trees provide a peaceful setting. The building retains local historical interest. It is privately owned and remains in use as a house.
