Description
This is a mid-19th century, 1½-storey cottage built in a style blending quasi-Georgian and vernacular elements. It is currently derelict.
The house is gabled, with a slate roof where many slates are missing, and external harling that is significantly deteriorated, exposing underlying stone walls with large, rough corner stones. Brick trim is present around windows and doors. Original chimneys are on each gable, but are disintegrating. The front elevation features a central doorway, lacking a door, topped by a rectangular fanlight with a geometric arrangement of narrow, vertical bars. Single windows flank the entrance, also lacking glass and with contemporary casements. Two sliding sash windows, also without glass, are visible in each gable, lighting attic rooms; their sash boxes are exposed. The rear elevation mirrors the arrangement of the front door and windows.
The building is set back approximately 10 metres from Mulkeeragh Road on its south side. It lacks boundary walls, gates or pillars, and the surrounding ground is heavily waterlogged. There are no outbuildings.
The house does not appear on Ordnance Survey maps from 1832 or the revision from 1856-58, but it is shown on maps from 1905. A 1970 building survey describes it as a late 19th-century house with harled walls, a slated roof, and gable chimneys. The entrance doorway is surmounted by a rectangular fanlight and the windows are described as double-hung with full glazing bars. The property was last occupied in the 1960s by a Mr. Jim Smith and his family, who were small farmers. It has since been sold to the present owner. Mulkeeragh townland historically belonged to the Haberdashers Proportion.
